Shooter & Hellride!

I had a busy night last Thursday 3/25/10. First, I went to the Grammy Museum for "The Drop"...this time it was Black Ribbons- the new album from Shooter Jennings. "The Drop" features musicians discussing their latest albums in front of an intimate audience of 200 in the Museum's Sound Stage. Shooter was joined by producer Dave Cobb and the discussion was moderated by Grammy Foundation and MusiCares Vice President Scott Goldman.

They spoke about inspiration for the album, the writing process and how Stephen King came to be involved in the project. A few tracks from the album were played over the PA and Shooter also played a few on the sound stage's piano. Afterwards, they took questions from the audience and signed copies of Black Ribbons. I was already a fan of the album or else I wouldn't have gone...but I appreciate it even more now. Check it out if you haven't already!

Shooter and Dave

Next up, I headed over to the Air Conditioned Supper Club in Venice to see Hellride play. They were going on around midnight and luckily traffic cooperated so I didn't miss anything. Mike Watt, Peter DiStefano and Stephen Perkins melted everyone's faces off with blistering Stooges covers and a Porno For Pyros song for the encore. I filmed the whole show and all 12 songs are up on my youtube channel. HERE

Salton Sea

I took a road trip to the Salton Sea on Marsh 20, 2010. Ever since seeing "Into the Wild", I've been wanting to check out Slab City and the surrounding area. I had the pleasure of meeting the creator of Salvation Mountain, Leonard Knight:

KAV, IWNBTS, Fishbone, Camp Freddy and Tom Morello! Woo!

12-02-09
The Echo

I went to see KAV on Wednesday at the LA Buzz Bands showcase at the Echo. They were great! My favorite song was Lizard King- and not because it has anything to do with Mr. Mojo- because it doesn't...you can here for yourself on their Myspace

The photos I took are HERE

Pershing Square

On Thursday, I went to Pershing Square in Downtown LA to see I Will Never Be The Same and Dramarama. This ice skating/concert event is ongoing and seems to be the best kept secret in LA. I wish there was better coverage/press on this because it should be completely packed! Parking is cheap, you can ice skate for $8 for an hour while listening to bands. This past Thursday, it wasn't just any band...it was one of my fave new bands- IWNBTS!

12-4-09
Fishbone@HOB, Camp Freddy@The Roxy

I started off my Friday night by going to the Fishbone show at the House of Blues on Sunset. Fun show that had me grinning from ear to ear. I was left wishing I had some of Angelo's energy! I took a few videos...

Alcoholic

Party at Ground Zero

After Fishbone's set, I headed over to see the first of 3 December dates that Camp Freddy is playing at the Roxy. I normally take video of their shows (check out my youtube... www.youtube.com/LAwomanPhotography) but there were signs all over the outside of the venue saying per CF's request, no cameras. So, I respected that. I caught the beginning of the opening band "Warner Drive" (their MYSPACE). They were good and I'd like to check out their full set sometime. Their next show is on December 12th at the Dragonfly. Next up were the Darling Stilettos. They performed longer than I'd seen them in the past and seem to have incorporated original music into their set. Either that or they were playing covers I didn't know. Camp Freddy finally hit the stage, after an unusually long delay- around 12:15. Guests were: Steve Jones, Steve Stevens, Frankie Perez, Susanna Hoffs, Vicki Petersen, Travis Barker, Mickey Avalon, Fred Durst and Mark McGrath.

12-5-09
The Actor's Gang

I attended the WTF! festival at the the Actor's Gang to help support the organization...oh, and to see Tom Morello! :) For more information, please go HERE. Tim Robbins, the Actor's Gang founder and Artistic Director, was on hand to introduce Tom. Those in attendance were fortunate enough to see the Nightwatchman in a very intimate setting- theater seats 100-150 people. After Tom played several songs, Shooter Jennings came out and performed a medley on his guitar, then moved to the piano. Tom came back out, plugged in and the two of them proceeded to tear the roof off! Highlights were Bruce Springsteen's "Ghost of Tom Joad" and Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land". Tom even got most of the audience on their feet to sing, clap and jump up and down to the last verse of This Land!

Joe Perry Project, 100 Monkeys & The Pity Party...

11-24-09
Joe Perry Project/Ghost Hounds @ The House Of Blues

The Joe Perry Project show at the HOB was great, with one "on, no!" moment and some surprises. I guess a fairly decent chunk of an audience at such a show wants to hear Aerosmith tunes...me, not so much. Hearing Dream On sung by anyone but Steven Tyler just doesn't sound right...even though Hagen Grohe has a great voice, I'm a Boston girl and it just sounds wrong! Other than that, I loved everything! Surprise 1...the opening band, the Ghost Hounds were fantastic! I hadn't heard of them and was happy that I got there early enough to see their whole set. Surprise 2...Slash came out to play with the Ghost Hounds on one song, and with JPP on one song. My Youtube link here: Walkin The Dog

set list:

11-29-09
100 Monkeys @ The Viper Room

I'd heard about 100 Monkeys and wanted to see if they were good enough to merit the buzz...or if it was more to do with one of the band members (Jackson Rathbone) being in the Twilight cast. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the show...though some of the shrieking was a bit much since I was trying to record some songs. They are a fun band to see live and I liked that swap instruments after each song. One of the better quality videos I took was an improvised song about pop rocks. Here

11-30-09
The Pity Party @Spaceland

I went to Spaceland to check out some new bands on Monday after reading a Flavorpill blurb on the event and the Happy Hollows residency there. Everything started later than I expected it to, so I didn't make it long enough to see the Happy Hollows. However, I saw a band called The Pity Party, who were great! The are a duo...male guitarist, female singer/drummer/keyboardist- sometime all three simultaneously. That alone was worth the price of admission. Oh wait...there was no cover. OK, that alone was worth jumping on the 101. There next show is December 19th at the El Rey. Their myspace is: myspace.com/thepityparty
